My grandpa said when he was in the army you had to have perfect vision. Is that still true today?

No, the Army will issue you glasses. If you want contacts, you got to pay them yourself. The Army does perform the surgery that can correct your vision. However, there are some jobs that require better vision. My grandpa said when he was in the army you had to have perfect vision. Is that still true today?
Not true. I first entered the Navy in 1957. The vision standards then are the same as they are now with the possible exception of flying duty and the special operations units that have evolved since I first enlisted. As a young boy I witnessed many parades in New York City that contained military units from all branches of the armed forces. There were a lot of guys wearing glasses in those formations.

One last point. We had a President who served as an artillery officer with the Missouri National Guard in France during World War One and achieved the rank of Captain. And Harry S. Truman sure wore glasses. My grandpa said when he was in the army you had to have perfect vision. Is that still true today?
Most of the people I've worked with in the army have worn glasses. In fact there is a lot of equipment that have addons just for prescription lenses to be fitted into. The military is very accommodating to those who wear glasses and provide eye exams and glasses after them every 12 months. So long as you're not legally blind you shouldn't have any problems.
When you join the army you have have one lazy eye and be near sited and still be accepted... Marines 20/20 or almost perfect!!!!!!!

The Army is huge because they take just about anyone.... My blind brother passed the eye exam when he went to MEPS....

hmmmmm..that tells you something. (he wasnt fully blind).. Pretty damn close.. he cant see small letters/semi small letters and he is color blind... The people said he had 20/20
I would say no concidering the amount of things there are in the army that cause vision decrease like computers. the army has changed sice the 40s to 80s they most likely alow any type of vision but blindness in the army as long as you have contacts or glasses.
no...not today. today the only job you have to have perfect vision for (with the eception of corrective surgery) is a pilot. and i think they are starting to give that one up to.
No, In the army the lowest vision you can have is 20/100 in one eye and 20/40 in the other
No. The required vision is 20/40.
no. not all jobs require it, but most you have to at least have correctable vision to 20/20
No, they have better glasses and goggles for the soldiers these days.
Haven't you seen the pictures of US soldiers wearing those ugly thick framed glasses?
some MOSs yes but most no
as long as your not legally blind
